(Patented) Acoustifence® – Greystar Corp. – N. Charleston Amtrak, SC – Commercial
A Greystar planned community in North Charleston, SC, situated close to double rail commuter tracks operated by Amtrak, began complaining about the rail noise (rail noise can exceed 90dB) and ask the property managers for a solution. After discussing the problem with a Senior Acoustiblok Consultant, they decided on patented Acoustifence (STC30). Used extensively to quiet rail and other types of transportation noise, 1/8-inch thin Acoustifence has a unique characteristic that sets it apart from other sound barriers when dealing with very low frequencies such as vehicular or train noise. In frequencies of 50 Hz and below, the heavy limp Acoustifence material actually begins to vibrate from low frequency sound waves. In essence it is transforming these low frequency sound waves into mechanical movement creating inaudible internal friction energy. According to the customer, in an effort to reduce the noise and create an attractive sound barrier, the 10-ft. high, approx. 1,400 linear ft. of Acoustifence material was installed in the interior of a double-sided wood fence. Once completed, the residents couldn’t believe their ears (Laboratory tests indicate that this transformation process reduces these low frequencies from penetrating Acoustifence by up to 60% relative to the human ear) and were delighted with the fence’s upscale look. Acoustifence is made and sourced in USA, low-maintenance, portable, UV-resistant and 100% recyclable. So acoustically ingenious the United States Patent Office awarded Acoustiblok a 20-year patent on Acoustifence and the material was just tested at Hurricane Engineering/Test Lab to withstand up to a 200-mph wind load.
