Village of Rye Brook, New York
Chapter 4 Population Characteristics
4-1
May 2012
Prepared by the Westchester County Department of Planning
4.1 Overview
Note: The US Census Bureau conducts a decennial census of the population every
ten years. While previous censuses have included a “long form” sent to a sample
of the population, the Census Bureau split this program into the American Com-
munity Survey (ACS) beginning in 2005. Many common topics then were not in-
cluded in the 2010 Census, which was based entirely on “100% data” from the
simple 10-question form sent to every housing unit in the country. For this chap-
ter, unless otherwise noted, data is from the decennial census.
The then-unincorporated area of the Town of Rye, which became
the Village of Rye Brook in 1982, enjoyed tremendous growth in the
mid-twentieth century, with the population jumping 128% from
2,661 in 1950 to 6,069 in 1960. The 1970 Census saw the area’s his-
toric population peak of 9,560. This period was followed by two
decades of decline during which the population fell to 7,765 in 1990
after being incorporated as a Village. As of 2010, the population
again increased to 9,347.
This population change in Rye Brook traces Westchester County’s
population trends to an extent, although these trends are far more
extreme in Rye Brook. The county experienced its biggest intercen-
sal growth of the century between 1950 and 1960, growing 29% to
808,891. The decade that saw the largest drop in Rye Brook’s popu-
lation, 1980 to 1990, also saw a drop in the county’s population, al-
though the countywide decrease was only 3%. Figures 4-1 and 4-2
show these changes for Rye Brook, Westchester County and sur-
rounding communities.

Planning Base Studies
Village of Rye Brook, New York
Chapter 4 Population Characteristics
4-3
May 2012
Prepared by the Westchester County Department of Planning
4.2 Density
Rye Brook’s population density as of 2010 was 2,671 people per
square mile, which was lower than most of Westchester’s Sound
Shore communities. This especially contrasts with neighboring Port
Chester, which was the second-most densely populated municipality
in Westchester County at 12,070 people per square mile. Within
Rye Brook, the neighborhoods that border Port Chester have the
highest density. Figures 4-3 and Map 4-1 show population density
in the Village and surrounding communities.
4.3 Age Characteristics
Rye Brook’s population has aged considerably since the unincorpo-
rated section of Rye Town’s population peaked in 1970. As shown
in Figure 4-4, the population under five years was 34.6% lower in
2010 than 1970 and the population over 75 in 2010 was 434.5%
higher than 1970. Several factors contribute to this aging population
– people are living longer, many households with young children in
the 1960’s and 1970’s have aged in place, and high housing prices,
coupled with the uncertainty of the housing recession have limited
the opportunities for younger families to purchase homes in the Vil-
lage. Figures 4-5, 4-6, 4-7 and 4-8 show age characteristics changes
in Rye Brook from 2000 to 2010 compared with Westchester
County.

4.4 Race and Ethnicity
The most significant demographic change over the past decade in
the Village has been the growth of the population who identify as
Hispanic or Latino, as seen in Figure 4-9, Race and Hispanic Origin.
This population has increased most significantly within the southern
portion of the Village, the area also within the Port Chester – Rye
Union Free School District, as shown in the Map 4-2 which also
shows Hispanic populations in surrounding communities. The in-
crease in the Hispanic population mirrors Westchester County as a
whole, where the Hispanic population increased in every municipal-
ity between 2000 and 2010. Rye Brook’s Hispanic population dou-
bled between 2000 and 2010, increasing from 468 (5.4% of the total
population) to 1,034 residents (11.1%). The non-Hispanic white
population increased a very small amount from 7,602 to 7,621, but
this represented a lower share of the population in 2010 (81.5%)
than it did in 2000 (88.4%). Other races increased modestly
throughout the decade, but continued to represent a very small pro-
portion of Village residents.
4.5 Place of Birth
According to the American Community Survey (ACS), 1,533 of
9,433 Rye Brook residents (16%) were estimated to be foreign born
for the years between 2005 and 2009. This is below the county aver-
age of 24% and significantly below that of Port Chester at 44%. The
proportion of foreign born residents in Rye Brook is similar to that
of many nearby communities such as Rye City (17%) and Harrison

below the poverty level, this accounts for approximately 9% of the
Village residents. It should be noted, because Rye Brook is a small
municipality, it is difficult to describe and use data for such charac-
teristics due to the small sample size. Figure 4-11, Median House-
hold Income, 2005-2009 shows these income figures for Rye Brook,
Westchester County and surrounding communities.
