Subject: re: proposed construction on King Street
Dear Mr. Bradbury,
We are genuinely concerned about the apartments that are likely to be built on King Street near the
schools. Our apolozies if we missed the comment window, but one of us will try to make the
meeting this Thursday.
Specifically, we would like to raise the following points:
1. The increase in traffic on and off the Hutch and on King Street, from 600 new housing units,
could be devastating to our community and those passing through. The width of the street is
not adequately designed to handle that kind of an increase in traffic flow. So many of us will be
late to school and other commitments on many occasions, and frustrated all too often.
2. The units are being considered for development of a 55+ community. This would adversely
impact financial support for our school budget proposals. More residents in our small
community who do not have a stake in passing the budgets would be detrimental to future
school funding – and ultimately decrease that stature of our schools in district rankings. This
would ultimately negatively impact property values for all residents.
a. At the same time, if a larger number of young families with children soon find their
way into the community, despite the 55-and-over goal, this would further crowd our
schools with finite resources and space. It's a no-win / no-win situation.
3. The impact of the proposed construction beginning at 7am for 3 years would severely
impact the ability of school buses to get kids to school on time (and home on time for
activites.) King Street would be the hardest hit, as mentioned above. In addition, morning
school drop off would be a nightmare for middle and high school parents. The noise from
blasting and construction next door would negatively impact our students during the school
day. Our fantastic school system is front and center in what makes our community unique and
desirable, and we need to preserve that special quality.
We are simply and emphatically not in favor of this proposal to add apartments to King
Street. We hope our opinion is heard well after the upcoming town debate of the housing
proposal.
Best,
2
