HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-03-01 - Parks and Rec Advisory Council Meeting Minutes MINUTES OF THE VILLAGE OF RYE BROOK PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COUNCIL 938 KING STREET RYE BROOK,New York 10573 March 1, 2016 Convene Meeting: Parks and Recreation Advisory Council Chairman Rick Buzin called the meeting to order at 8:03pm. The following Members of the Parks & Recreation Advisory Council were present: Advisory Council Members: Chairman Buzin, Susan Gardner, Michael Keilman, Emma Saghir, Jason Steinberg, Scott Tillison, Adam Zahl Recreation Department Members: Robert Bertolacci, Parks and Recreation Superintendent Jennifer Leichter, Office Assistant I. Minutes: a. Approve February 2, 2016 Minutes: Chairman Buzin asked for a motion to accept the February 2, 2016 minutes. Council Member Keilman made the motion to accept the February 2, 2016 minutes and Council Member Zahl seconded the motion. The minutes were accepted and approved. II. Public View Points: There were no public view points to report. III.Chairman's Remarks—Rick Buzin Chairman Buzin said we had discussed the situation of a carnival versus a circus for the spring. He said it was suggested as a possibility that maybe the carnival be moved to the fall and the subject had been brought before the Village Board via our Council's liaison, Trustee Rednick. As it stands right now, it does not appear that the Village Board has an interest in having a carnival. There was much discussion amongst the Council Members as to why the Village Board rejected the idea of a carnival for the spring and fall. IV.Superintendent's Report: a. County Center Basketball: Superintendent Bertolacci said our teams have been announced and the tournament will take place next week. b. Rye Brook Birthday: Superintendent Bertolacci said the Village Board has asked him to look in to different themes for the birthday celebration as well as changing up the menu a little bit. 1168377.1 c. Recreation Leader Position: Superintendent Bertolacci said he had interviewed (6) candidates for the Rec Leader position and he has made a recommendation to the Village Administrator. d. Spring Programs: Superintendent Bertolacci said the spring/summer brochure should be going out by the end of next week. He expressed there were no new programs in the spring. He said we are working on Ice Cream Fridays in the park during the month of July. He mentioned we will be taking over the After School YMCA program at the school in the fall. Regarding the After School program, Superintendent Bertolacci said he will be interviewing candidates, mostly aids from the school, with Tracy Taylor who is from the school. V. Village-PTA Coordinating Subcommittee—Rick Buzin: Chairman Buzin stated that we are at a point where the Village and the PTA have a reasonably good relationship and the fact that the Village is taking over the After School program at the school proves this. Chairman Buzin said that another accomplishment between the PTA and the Village is that the School and the Village have shared emails which should assist with communication. VL Basketball Subcommittee Report—Mike Keilman: Council Member Keilman said he had nothing negative to report and that he had spoken to Janice and all was going well. VII. Grievance Subcommittee Report- Adam Zahl: a. Code of Conduct: Council Member Zahl said he had nothing to report. VIII. Baseball Subcommittee Report - Scott Tillison: Council Member Tillison said baseball season would be starting soon. Superintendent Bertolacci stated opening day is April 9t'. Council Member Tillison mentioned he got some good feedback from the clinics. He hopes we can continue to do more clinics through the season as people are asking for more. There was discussion of expanding the scope of play and finding games, especially where the minor leagues were concerned as there may only be a couple of teams. Council Member Tillison said people are also asking for more practice time. There was general discussion of how to integrate more practice time for the kids. Council Member Tillison commented that he thought it was going to be a strong season for the major leagues as a lot of kids are going to play. IX.Old Business: Superintendent Bertolacci stated the playground had been ordered and we went with Option 1. He also said he got Kompan to come down on the price a little bit. He stated the playground will be set up in June/July as it is a two week process to put in. 1168377.1 X. New Business: Superintendent Bertolacci said he is hiring a Senior Recreation Leader to hopefully be appointed next Tuesday and the camp will be her responsibility to run. He said the Senior Rec Leader will be the Camp Director and he will work closely with her to bring more credibility to the program. Chairman Buzin inquired if the Senior Rec Leader had any camp experience. Superintendent Bertolacci responded she does, as she has worked at the Dobbs Ferry Camps for the last 3 or 4 years as a Sports Specialist. Council Member Tillison asked if Recreation was focusing on trying to improve the camp with any new additions. Superintendent Bertolacci said we need to work on getting a better pool to start with, although he did not think he could beat last year's price from Carver. There was discussion amongst the Council about the pool at Carver as it is an indoor pool and the kids do not like it. Superintendent Bertolacci said he had spoken with Bellefair and it is not an option to swim there. He stated that in previous years we swam at Suny Purchase which was expensive. He said he had not yet spoken with Manhattanville but he is assuming it is going to be expensive too. There was discussion amongst the Council about the possibility of increasing the camp fees but it was suggested that enrollment should increase before considering increasing the fees. XI.Adjournment: Chairman Buzin asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Council Member Keilman made the motion to adjourn the meeting and Council Member Saghir seconded the motion. All approved and the meeting was adjourned at 8:47pm. The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Council will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 8:00pm.
