Convene Meeting: Meeting called to order by Chairman Appelbaum at 08:00 PM.
Approval of Minutes: Motion made to accept the minutes of the 12/01/2008 and
02/02/2009 Traffic Commission meetings as is by Commissioner Brackman, seconded by
Commissioner Heiser. All are in favor.
Report to Commission: Nothing reported to the Traffic Commission.
Old Business: No old business.
New Business:
1- The preliminary plans for the redesign of the intersection of N. Ridge St. and
Hawthorne Ave. were submitted to the Traffic Commission for review. The plans
included changes such as the moving of stop signs, addition of no parking signs,
the addition of a no left turn sign (possibly only during school hours) at
Hawthorne Ave onto N. Ridge St. and the reduction of lanes on Hawthorne Ave.
from two lanes to one lane. The Commission discussed the changes and decided
to table any decisions on the redesigning of this intersection until they visited the
area and discussed alternate designs following their findings. One of the main
concerns of the commission is the area in which the current school crossing guard
is parking his vehicle. The commission feels that having this vehicle parked
anywhere within the intersection of N. Ridge St. and Hawthorne Ave. will
obstruct both the view of motorists and pedestrians causing an unsafe situation.
2- Visibility obstructions at intersections: These types of obstructions are most often
due to overgrown foliage on both village and private properties. A suggestion was
made by Commissioner Heiser that in addition to having the Rye Brook Highway
Department and Rye Brook Police Department document such obstructions as has
been done in the past, the village might consider adding a feature to the Rye
Brook Website for the reporting of any visibility obstructed intersections by
residents. Motion made by Commissioner Heiser and seconded by Commissioner
Brackman.
3- Parking on Knollwood Drive: Commission Heiser has observed a possible traffic
situation in this area on several occasions due to vehicles parking on both sides of
this narrow roadway. A request was made that this area be put under observation
to see if anything could be done to remedies this situation. One suggestion made
was the possibility of making one side of Knollwood Drive a no parking zone, if
feasible. Officers of the Rye Brook Police Department will be instructed to check
the area, report any parking situations and give any suggestion on improvements
to Sgt Davison for documentation. Motion made by Commissioner Berman and
seconded by Commissioner Brackman.
Meeting adjourned: Motion by Commissioner Brackman. Motion seconded by
Commissioner Blank. All are in favor 08:45 pm.
Next Meeting: 06/01/2009 at 8:00 pm.
